Want to make toast while camping, or finding yourself without a toaster for a few days? Here’s a simple, time-tested trick—often taught in scouting—that produces reliable, evenly browned toast using just a frying pan.
To make it, sprinkle a thin, even layer of salt across the bottom of a dry frying pan. Heat the pan over medium to medium-high heat until the salt is hot but not smoking. Lay a slice of bread directly on the bed of hot salt and let it brown on the first side. When it reaches your preferred color, flip the bread and brown the other side. The result is a crisp, golden slice of toast that closely resembles toaster toast. You won’t taste salt on the bread—the salt simply conducts heat to produce an even crust.
This method is useful when cooking outdoors, when a toaster is unavailable, or simply when you want a quick stovetop option. It’s fast, requires minimal equipment, and is forgiving: adjust the heat slightly if the bread browns too quickly or too slowly. For variety, try using thicker slices, different types of bread, or finishing with butter, jam, or other toppings after toasting.
