My dream home would have soaring, 100-foot ceilings. That’s not realistic—our ceilings are quite low: just eight feet. I used to cry about it (honestly). When we first planned our remodel, the top priority on my list was vaulting the ceilings. I also wanted to replace the linoleum, update the tired wood cabinets, and swap out the worn countertops. The old windows with condensation between the panes bothered me too.
When I explained my must-haves to the contractor, he couldn’t help but laugh. Not cruelly, but there was clearly no way my “needs” were going to happen within our budget.
I briefly considered dramatic measures, then accepted that ripping off the roof and raising the entire structure wasn’t feasible. Once I let go of that unrealistic goal, I realized low ceilings can look wonderful with thoughtful design. Amber Interiors is a great example of making small spaces feel stylish and intentional.
Do you have low ceilings? How have you worked with them to create a comfortable, attractive home?
