I’ve made this milkshake for decades and it remains a favorite summer treat. While copycat recipes are everywhere, this version stands out for its bright peach flavor and creamy texture.

A tiny splash of almond extract enhances the peach flavor without being obvious — it’s a subtle trick that lifts the whole shake.

I first shared this recipe in 2008 and refreshed it with new photos and tips to make it even easier to prepare.

How to make homemade peach shakes

  1. Prep – Peel and slice ripe peaches. If you’re doubling or tripling the recipe, use the blanching method described below to peel many peaches quickly.
  2. Puree – Place all but a few peach slices and the milk in a blender and puree until very smooth. img 284 2
  3. Blend – Add the ice cream and almond extract, then blend until thick and smooth.
  4. Peach chunks – Add the remaining peach slices and pulse a few times to create small fruit chunks. If you prefer no pieces, blend all the peaches with the milk.
  5. Serve – Garnish with whipped cream and a peach slice or maraschino cherry, if desired.

The easiest way to peel peaches

  1. Heat water – Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Use enough water to fully submerge the peaches.
  2. Blanch – Using a slotted spoon, lower the peaches into the boiling water for about 30 seconds. img 284 5
  3. Ice bath – Immediately transfer the peaches to a bowl of ice water and cool them completely. Add more ice if needed. blanching peaches for peeling
  4. Peel – The skins should slip off easily. If not, give them a few more seconds in boiling water.

Pro tips

  • Use ripe peaches for the best flavor; they’ll be naturally sweeter.
  • Fresh peaches work best — canned peaches don’t provide the same bright taste.
  • For a classic diner look, top the shake with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

Peach milkshake variations

  • Add 1–2 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate for a citrus lift, or substitute fresh orange juice for some of the milk.
  • Swap 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for the almond if you prefer a milder flavor.
  • Freeze a few peach chunks for a thicker shake. Add more milk or fresh peaches for a thinner consistency.
  • 2% milk works well, but you can use whole milk, half-and-half, or a plant-based milk to suit your preference.

Servings: 2 large milkshakes | Prep time: 10 mins

Peach season isn’t complete without one of these creamy shakes. A touch of almond extract makes them memorable.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sliced fresh peaches, divided
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups good-quality vanilla ice cream
  • 1/8 tsp almond extract (optional but recommended)

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the peaches. Place all but about 1/2 cup of the slices in the blender with the milk and blend until smooth.
  2. Add the ice cream and almond extract, then blend again until thick and creamy.
  3. Add the reserved peach slices and pulse a few times until the shake reaches your desired consistency. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Chill the peaches before blending so they don’t melt the ice cream too quickly.
  • These are delicious with a couple tablespoons of frozen orange juice concentrate for a fruity twist.
