I love bringing a plate of warm glazed donuts, sprinkled and cheerful, to my family — it always brightens the morning.

This recipe is straightforward and forgiving. The donut batter mixes in one bowl, and the glaze is simply hot cream poured over chocolate chips, left to rest, then whisked to a glossy finish. Dipping freshly baked donuts into that glaze is a small, joyful moment every baker knows and loves.

Ingredients

For the donuts:

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup + 3 tbsp buttermilk (or 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp whole milk + 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the glaze:

  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 420°F (215°C). Grease a regular-size 6-donut pan and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate measuring cup, mix the buttermilk (or milk + vinegar), egg, vanilla, and vegetable oil until blended.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth, about 2 minutes.
  5. Transfer the batter to a zip-top bag, snip a corner, and pipe the batter evenly into the donut cups. Tap the pan on the counter to release air bubbles.
  6. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in a few places comes out clean.
  7. Cool the donuts in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  8. To make the glaze: place chocolate chips in a medium bowl. Heat the heavy cream until hot but not boiling (microwave in 20-second increments works well). Pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips and let sit undisturbed for 5 minutes, then whisk until smooth.
  9. Dip each donut into the glaze, return to the cooling rack, and add sprinkles while the glaze is still wet.
