satisfy your growing teenager's appetite with these whole food recipes that are not only healthy, but delicious

A reader recently wrote asking for help feeding her teenage children. Between work, activities and busy schedules, getting a home-cooked meal on the table can feel overwhelming. With fast food and convenience options everywhere, providing nutritious, satisfying home meals matters more than ever.

For me, cooking is one of the clearest ways I show love to my family. Choosing fresh ingredients, preparing them with care and serving a warm meal creates memories I hope my children keep for life. Sharing home-cooked food is something I want them to pass on one day.

Not everyone loves cooking or has time to experiment with new recipes each week, and that’s OK. My goal is to encourage parents to keep meals simple, reliable and wholesome — whether that’s a quick pasta that a college student adores or a flavorful roasted chicken for the whole family.

Below are practical tips I shared with the mom who reached out. They’re straightforward, time-saving strategies to help you feed hungry teens without stress.

  1. Grilling is fast and flavorful. Boneless chicken thighs, breasts and most fish cook quickly on a hot grill. A simple rub of herbs, spices and olive oil adds instant flavor. Quick marinades are another easy way to boost taste before grilling.
  2. Roast a few whole chickens or several chicken parts at once. Saving one cooked bird for another meal is a major time saver. Shred the leftovers for quesadillas, tacos, cold sesame noodles, fried rice or stir-fry noodles — versatile options that come together fast.
  3. Use a slow cooker to have meals ready or to keep them warm. Slow cookers are ideal for busy days when family schedules don’t align; they allow dinner to stay hot so everyone can serve themselves when they arrive.
  4. Keep a handful of quick, reliable vegetable sides in rotation so teens get their daily veggies. Favorites include steamed broccoli with toasted garlic oil, simple salads (romaine, cherry tomatoes and avocado), and roasted or grilled vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots and asparagus. Mashed cauliflower mixed with potatoes is another kid-friendly option.
  5. Serve seasonal fruit with dinner. Individual bowls of berries, grapes, watermelon, mango or other in-season fruit make it easy for teens to eat a healthy portion of fruit every day.
