Spring cleaning is in full swing, and while I enjoy shaking off the last of winter and preparing my home and yard for warmer days, seasonal allergies and sinus issues are an unfortunate trade-off. Fortunately, simple cleaning habits can significantly reduce indoor allergens and help you breathe easier all season long.

Here are ten practical items to add to your spring cleaning checklist to curb indoor allergens and improve air quality:
- Wash bed sheets and linens weekly. Regular laundering removes pollen, dust, and skin debris that attract dust mites.
- Vacuum mattresses seasonally and use allergen-proof pillow and mattress covers. You can run a vacuum over the mattress to remove dust mites and other debris; wash the covers weekly.
- Change the air filters in your home to lower airborne allergens. I use Filtrete air filters; the Odor Reduction Filter is especially effective at removing common household odors such as cooking, smoke, pet smells, mildew, and cleaning chemicals.
- Steam clean carpets often and vacuum daily with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. Steam cleaning destroys allergens rather than just moving them around. Aim to steam clean carpets every six months; if allergies are severe, consider replacing carpet with hard flooring.
- Wash shower curtains and liners monthly, since they can harbor mold in damp environments.
- Wash stuffed animals regularly to remove dust and allergens that accumulate on fabric toys.
- Launder bath towels at least once a week to prevent mildew and reduce allergen buildup.
- Adopt a no-shoes policy indoors. Shoes track pollen, dirt, and other allergens into the home—leave them at the door to minimize contamination.
- Wipe down laundry room appliances and dust underneath the washer and dryer to prevent lint and dust accumulation.
- Choose environmentally friendly cleaning products. They clean effectively without introducing unnecessary harsh chemicals into your home’s air.
What’s left on your spring cleaning list? Did you remember to change your home’s air filter this month? How do you reduce indoor allergens where you live?

I recently swapped my old filter for the Filtrete Ultimate Allergen Reduction Filter. It offers strong performance for removing common airborne irritants like pollen, mold spores, dust mite debris, pet dander, household dust, and some bacteria. If indoor allergies are a concern in your home, upgrading your air filter is a simple, effective step to improve indoor air quality.
